Los Angeles County Counsel, on behalf of the People of the State of California (“People”), reached a court-approved settlement with TaxSlayer LLC (“TaxSlayer”) in People of the State of California v. TaxSlayer Inc. (24STCV34102)* filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court in which People alleged that certain digital technologies on TaxSlayer’s website violated California’s Unfair Competition Law and its False Advertising Law.
People alleged that TaxSlayer incorporated or otherwise permitted third-party tracking devices commonly called pixels on its website, which tracked customers’ activities, including their confidential tax return information without their knowledge. Customers’ activities were transmitted to or intercepted by Meta or Google, both unauthorized parties, without TaxSlayer providing notice to customers or seeking their consent.
The court-approved settlement includes a permanent injunction against TaxSlayer preventing further violations, payment of restitution in the total amount of $840,000 for eligible customers, a civil penalty of $100,000 under Business and Professions Code section 17206, and $160,000 in attorneys’ fees and costs.
Per the settlement, Analytics Consulting LLC, a third-party administrator, is handling the settlement claims process, on behalf of the Los Angeles County Counsel, for eligible claimants. Eligible claimants are customers of TaxSlayer between February 6, 2018 and November 17, 2022. Claimants that received a notification of the settlement payment or other eligible claimants can email LATaxSlayerSettlement@noticeadministrator.com or visit www.LosAngelesCountySettlementwithTaxSlayer.com if you have questions or seek additional information.
*Although TaxSlayer settled this lawsuit, it did not admit liability; nor did it admit the allegations of the County’s complaint.
